内容記述 | Shelley's "The Triumph of Life" was left unfinished because of the poet's accidental death. Shelley scholars have debated on how he might have finished the poem. The focus of this paper is to clarify Shelley's original design for this poem. In the first place, it contends that the fresco called 'Triumph of Death' in the Camposanto in Pisa gave Shelley the inspiration to write the poem. Secondly, the paper discusses a matter of two texts of "The Triumph of Life", namely Mary Shelley's and Donald H. Reiman's texts. The readers who read the poem edited by Mary Shelley would have the impression that the poem was completed and composed from a very pessimistic point of view. T. S. Eliot read Mary Shelley's text and spoke highly of this poem because of the pessimism. On the other hand, the readers who read the poem edited by Donald H. Reiman would have the impression that the poem is uncompleted and Shelley had the intention of completing the poem. Most of today's Shelley scholars have recognized the poem edited by Reiman as the most reliable one. Thirdly, the paper concludes that "The Triumph of Life" is unfinished and Shelley intended to write the latter half of the poem which would be full of optimistic idealism because his central purpose of composing the poem was to scatter "the germs of the flower and the fruit of latest time." | |||||
