Of these ceremonies in which Kayu is involuted is pregnancy and child birth. The diaries and literature of the nobels of the Heian period show manyrecords of such ceremonies. Childbirth in those days was a matter of life and death for both the mather and the newborn baby, and thus the prayers entrusted to the Kayu was also a serious matter.
